Professor Diran MAKINDE is the Director of the African Biosafety Network of Expertise (ABNE), a flagship program of the African Union’s New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD). ABNE is a science-based Biosafety resource network aimed at empowering African regulators with science-based information to enable informed decision-making on biotechnology products. ABNE was conceptualized under NEPAD’s Consolidated Plan of Action and fulfills the recommendation of the High-Level Panel on Modern Biotechnology ‘Freedom to Innovate’ by Juma and Serageldin (2007). ABNE Prof Makinde is also President of the Board of AfricaBio, a non-profit biotechnology stakeholder association based in South Africa. Prior to his current appointment he held several academic positions in Nigeria and Zimbabwe. He earned the degree of Doctor in Veterinary Medicine (1976) and a PhD in Veterinary physiology at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria (1986).
