" I found the exposure to equipment I had not used before particularly interesting. The trainers were really patient and were able to simplify the course content.

Molecular Biology pilot program at Moi University

Conducting lab trials/experiments has always been challenging because of the limited availability of resources. So most of the time you end up dropping studies that would have enhanced your research. ~CCMB trainee

In most research and educational facilities in Africa, their research or practical training is hampered due to a lack of equipment, reagents or adequate lab space. Thus, in March 2023, a Molecular Biology pilot program was conducted by IPBO at Moi University, Kenya. The primary objective of this program was to offer a hands-on training course on molecular biology techniques, including DNA extraction, PCR, and gel electrophoresis analysis. Despite the participation of 28 trainees in this course, access to laboratory equipment, such as pipettes, was restricted, limiting the program's effectiveness. However, with donations to the Kringloop initiative, IPBO acquired adequate laboratory equipment to ensure the program's smooth and successful completion.

Providing labs with essential equipment before properly training the receiving team can often be counterproductive. Therefore, during our molecular biology course, we included a module consisting of practical training sessions for the trainees to equip them with the skills to utilize the equipment efficiently.
