Madina Diancoumba

My PhD research work was a collaborative effort between ICRISAT India and Mali. I combined screening methods and crop modelling to identify climate-smart sorghum packages for West Africa with drought adaptive traits. That allowed me to learn the fundamentals of crop physiology.

Currently, I work as a Post-doctoral/Consultant fellow at ICRISAT –WCA Crop Improvement Program in Bamako. I have been supporting the Crop Improvement Program in defining Target Population of Environments (TPEs) using breeders' multilocation trials dataset and crop simulation models and establishing and testing a Managed Stress Environment to evaluate their early generation sorghum, millet and groundnut varieties. My work will further be extended regionally with research activities in Senegal.

I am currently willing to deepen my knowledge in high-throughput crop phenotyping, root phenotyping infrastructure, aerial image analysis, and data analysis tools. I would like to continue using precision phenotyping to support the Crop Improvement Program in decision-making.

The Open Doors Fellowship Program (ODPF) for women researchers in Africa grant allows me to be exposed to new advanced technologies in drought phenotyping in field and glasshouse conditions and expand my network of colleagues in Africa and Belgium. But also to improve my skills in phenotypic data collection using sustainable and innovative technologies and data analysis and interpretation.
