About the course

Molecular biology is an invaluable toolbox used in all branches of biology or biochemistry. When performing the identification of nematodes or plant species, the improvement and evaluation of germplasm with desired traits, molecular techniques like PCR and bio-informatics are critical. In this crash course biology, we will focus on plant biotechnology, but the ideas and skills can be transferred to other disciplines in biotechnology.

Plant biotechnology is fast growing and is knowledge and resource intensive. Progress and innovation can occur through collaboration in which researchers can come together and learn shared goals. Practical sessions are essential for future researchers to develop skills and build motivation and self-efficacy.

We aim to share research capacity, knowledge and technologies between Flemish researchers and African stakeholders and stimulate networking between institutes in Sub-Sahara Africa (SSA). For capacity building, IPBO strongly supports using all available tools and scientific knowledge to meet the sustainable development goals stated by the United Nations.

The trainees received a pre-course workbook and exercise to refresh their memory on DNA synthesis. Later, on March 20, 2023, the trainees attended a 4-day in-person training. The course consisted of Bioinformatics, DNA extraction, setting up a PCR, gel electrophoresis and restriction analysis.

Skill based objectives
ccmb_lab practices
  • Hands-on experience with bioinformatics,
  • Practical experience in DNA extraction, PCR and restriction digests.
  • How to calculate the weight of salts or  liquid volume is required to make the required reagents
  • Good lab practices

The crash course in molecular biology was held at Moi University, Kenya, in the week of 20th-24th  March 2023. The participants included lecturers, lab technicians and master students. The participants learnt basic bioinformatic analysis, primer design, extracting DNA, and setting up a PCR and gel electrophoresis. We extend our gratitude to VIB-KU Leuven PhD student Marianna Decet and @VIB University of Antwerp Research technician Ivy Cuijt, who volunteered to join us in teaching during the whole week in Kenya.
